He is best known for his three ballets, The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). Stravinsky began his musical career as a pianist and conductor in the Russian Imperial Ballet. He then moved to Paris, where he studied composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and became a close friend of Sergei Diaghilev, the director of the Ballets Russes. Stravinsky's music was featured in several of Diaghilev's ballets, including The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring. Stravinsky's music is characterized by its rhythmic complexity and its use of dissonance. He was also a master of orchestration, and his works often feature unusual combinations of instruments. He wrote in a variety of musical styles, including neoclassicism, serialism, and primitivism. Stravinsky was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1962 for his composition Threni. He died in 1971 in New York City.
